Gifts for police officers gift guide: Disturbing the Peace crime-themed soy candles in three sizes with evidence markers

Gifts for Police Officers That Aren't Another Coffee Mug

, by Presumed Innoscent, 3 min reading time

Somewhere in every police officer's kitchen is a cabinet of coffee mugs they were given as gifts. If you're shopping for an officer, a detective, a dispatcher or someone about to graduate from the academy, here's something that won't end up in that cabinet.

Every Presumed Innoscent scent is named for a criminal charge and comes with its own suspect description, written like a police blotter with a sense of humor. They're hand-poured in small batches in Falls Church, Virginia, with 100% American-grown soy wax and a cotton wick. People in law enforcement tend to laugh first and then say, "I've arrested that guy."

Pick the charge that fits their unit

The easiest way to choose is to match the crime to the work they do.

  • Patrol: Disturbing the Peace. Lavender, lemon, eucalyptus and cedar. The suspect turned "a quiet evening into an unsolicited street performance." It's also the calmest scent we make, which suits the end of a shift.
  • Narcotics: Drug Possession. Nag Champa incense, with a suspect arrested "shortly after officers paid a visit and were offered free samples."
  • Homicide and detectives: Serial Killing. It smells like Fruit Loops. The suspect's hobbies reportedly include "collecting souvenirs."
  • Warrants, court security and bailiffs: Failure to Appear. Sea salt, cardamom, orange peel and amber. The defendant phoned the clerk at 8:55 a.m. to say they were "five minutes away." That was in March.
  • Customs, border and federal agents: Smuggling. Sandalwood, citrus, spice, tobacco and cedar. The suspect insisted he was "just the delivery guy."
  • Federal task forces and counterintelligence: Espionage. Rose, magnolia, jasmine and mahogany. When officers asked the suspect to remove their glasses, "their nose and mustache came off as well."
  • Fire investigators and firefighters: Arson. Bonfire embers, smoke and maple. The suspect's "combustion research" ended "when the fire department arrived to peer-review his results."
  • Loss prevention and retail crime: Shoplifting. Peppermint, vanilla and cream, and a defendant who argued that everything was "intended as gifts."
  • The one with the best stories: Indecent Exposure (mulled cider) or Vandalism (pumpkin, cinnamon and clove). Every officer has answered both of these calls.

Academy graduations, promotions and retirements

For a graduation, a promotion or a retirement, a candle in the 11 oz size ($24) makes a proper gift on its own. For a whole squad or shift, the 3 oz size ($8) and the six-piece wax melts ($5) let you give everyone a different charge.

For the station, the cruiser and the dispatch floor

Open flames aren't welcome in most stations or dispatch centers. Every scent also comes as wax melts for a warmer and as a room spray, and many come as soap and lotion.

How long do they burn? About 18 hours for the 3 oz, 40 hours for the 6.5 oz and 70 hours for the 11 oz.

Is this making light of crime? The jokes are about hapless fictional suspects, the kind every officer has met. There are no real cases and no real victims on our labels.
